The adoption of the veterans in our local nursing home, PruittHealth, is one of the main projects of the James Stewart Chapter NSDAR. We send cards for special occasions and take them gift bags several times a year. Chapter members go by and visit our veterans when they are in town.
Birthdays
Birthday cards are sent to all our veterans from the chapter and the members.
Christmas
Members of the chapter donate items for the veterans Christmas bags. Each bag is filled with deodorant, lotion, bar soap, liquid soap, toothpaste, socks, t-shirts, shaving cream, candy, fruit, cards, and a home-made bag to hang on a walker or wheel chair for carrying items. The bags are delivered before Christmas by groups of members. The veterans thoroughly enjoyed visiting with chapter members and sharing stories about their service days.
Valentines Day
Members send Valentines to the veterans and some deliver small candy treats.
Armed Services Day
The James Stewart Chapter has honored our veterans in many different ways on Armed Services Day. If it is needed, the chapter presents a new flag to the PruittHealth facility in honor of the veterans living and working there. On these occasions, chapter members host a flag ceremony where the old flag is taken down and folded and the new flag is run up the pole. Local American Legion members, our veterans, their families, and residents and staff of the facility meet at the flagpole for the ceremony. In years when a new flag is not needed, chapter members send cards and treats to our veterans.
Veterans Day
Members of the chapter donate treats and/or cards for our veterans.
